_Getting Started Working at Home
_So you have decided to join the workforce of work at home
employees. You know what you are good at and you are determined to
find success. So what now? What do you need to do to be successful
working from home? Well, that really all depends on what you are
choosing to pursue. Just as with everything in life, the details do
matter. You wouldn’t go to law school if you were planning to be an
accountant. Preparing for a work at home job generally requires some
sort of training on your part. There are some things unique to job type
and other practices that are more universal. In this article, we will
focus on the universal preparation tips and touch on a few specifics as
we go.
Do your Homework
Unless you are one of the lucky ones to breeze through school, sleeping through class and partying all night, you likely had to do some homework to keep on top of things. This is especially true for a market that can change as fast as the weather. Just because you think you know what your industry needs and wants, does not mean that the protocol hasn’t changed virtually overnight. Be prepared to be flexible and spend some time checking out your competition. Ask around to find what works and what doesn’t work. Word of mouth is a great resource and can be your power tool. With social networking tools like Twitter, Facebook and Google, getting feedback and finding information has never been easier.
2 – Be ready to invest some time and money
Let me start by reiterating that most work at home jobs that ask you to pay are bogus. Do not be fooled into paying someone for information. Most of these will end up taking your money and leaving you with a complex MLM scheme requiring you to ask others to pay you for the very same “great” work at home opportunity you just invested your own money into. Obviously, this is not a good investment and these jobs are nothing more than one circular rainbow with no pot of gold. The get rich quick part of this deal is based on your ability to dupe others into the very “job” you got suckered into. Even the shadiest sales job I have ever held had more substance than this, being smart enough to offer some reward at the end. But, I guess that is the “make millions overnight” part of this deal. It will never happen.
So back to the original claim, why would I tell you to invest time, or more specifically, money? Well, because change generally requires a bit of both and this certainly falls under the category of change. Think of this as you would any other job search. If your goal is to be a customer service agent you will need a headset, computer, phone connection and high speed internet. When you are employed by a corporation, they usually provide these things for you. When you are working from home you will need to be prepared to make this investment yourself.
If customer service is not your thing and you are looking to promote some sort of goods or service, you will need to take the necessary steps to build a website. You then will need to invest some time to learn how to build your site, or money to hire someone to do it for you. No one can tell you what the best option will be for your unique situation, but sometimes hiring people with specialized expertise can pay off in the end. The faster your website is up and running, the faster you can begin to turnaround a profit. However, if you have the patience and skills, a self guided study course via trial and error is always an option.
3 – Be prepared and organized
Just like the story of the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race. It is easy to begin running right out of the gate. But nothing will end a race faster than showing up barefoot. Without a strategy we can easily loose momentum causing financial stumbling blocks, confusion, boredom and frustration. Be smart about how you approach your decision to work at home. Don’t call your boss and release 15 years of suppressed aggression without a game plan. Make sure your work at home opportunity is legitimate and can offer the financial, mental and social criteria you need to sustain it long term. You would hate to give your boss the goodbye speech, walk out the door, get hit by a car and realize as you are being loaded into the ambulance that you just forfeited your health insurance. Be smart, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, have a backup plan.
4 - Be persistent
By taking on a work at home job, essentially you are taking on the job of a salesman. Regardless of the type of job you choose to pursue, you are going to have to market yourself. The bottom line is without customers there is no business. You are bound to get hundreds, possibly thousands of “no’s” but as any salesman can tell you, all you need is one “yes” and you’re off and running. Stay focused, don’t get lost in propaganda or flashy ads. The smart professionals know that money is best spent retaining good help. Just because you can find 10 flashing ads that promote a certain business opportunity does not mean it is a good investment.
5- Have a positive attitude
Lastly, and possibly the most important, have a positive attitude. There is an unspoken, unwritten universal language that is conveyed through attitude alone. Don’t be fooled by the computer screen thinking that you can get away with a negative attitude. Get up early and get ready each morning as if you were meeting your most important client. Post positive affirmations around your workspace reminding you of the beauty of life and how lucky you are to have this opportunity. If you are able to implement all these suggestions into your quest to work from home, you will be one step closer to the freedom and happiness that you set out to find.
